EI insists on free universal access to education at UN meeting

published 23 November 2006 updated 23 November 2006

EI recently attended an Expert Meeting on Universal Access to Services organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from 14-16 November in Geneva.

Education is an essential service, like health and water. There is a necessity to focus on policy and regulatory frameworks for ensuring universal access to these essential services, linking the debate to the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) negotiations to liberalise trade in services, including negotiations for future disciplines on domestic regulations.

It was an opportunity for EI to reaffirm its commitment for quality public education and free access to education. A note on "Trade Liberalisation and Universal Access to Education Services" was disseminated at the meeting.

More information will follow in the next issue of our email newsletter on GATS and the commercialisation of education, "TradEducation News".
