Council of Pacific Education adopts Code of Ethics

published 16 December 2010 updated 16 December 2010

Teachers are committed to the highest standards of professional service towards their students. Based on this certainty, the Council of Pacific Education (COPE) has adopted a Code of Ethics.

The declaration was adopted at COPE's last bi-annual meeting in Fiji following intensive discussions. Stakeholders from the teaching profession's several sectors supported delegates in their decision-making. Moreover, participants used the EI Declaration on Professional Ethics as a foundation for the new Code.

Govind Singh, COPE General Secretary, said: "The teaching profession and the communities teachers serve have an expectation of high standards of ethical behaviour. Teachers in the South Pacific are committed to these high standards and will thoroughly implement these recommendations." He went on to add: "To that end, UNICEF has offered to fund pilot training programmes at national and school level in two countries."
