Son of NEA member slain by Islamic State

published 18 November 2014 updated 24 November 2014

The latest act of violence committed by ISIS has left one family and member of the National Education Association in mourning following the killing of their son and aid worker in Syria.

A graphic video released by the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, has confirmed the death of Abdul-Rahman (Peter) Kassig, the son of National Education Association (NEA) member Edward Kassig of Indiana. The 26-year-old former U.S. Army Ranger-turned-aid worker was beheaded, along with a group of Syrian soldiers.

Kassig, who was kidnapped last year in Syria while delivering relief supplies, became the latest victim of the group’s brutality and propaganda efforts, despite his parents’ tireless efforts to seek his release.

Education International (EI) sends it condolences and support to the Kassig family. As a member of one of EI’s American affiliates, Edward Kassig represents exactly the opposite to that of ISIS, or any group that portrays acts of violence or oppression against innocent civilians. In the same spirit of his father, Abdul-Rahman had dedicated himself to helping others.

Education International, through its Unite for Quality Education Campaign, continues to clearly speak out against ISIS and any group that targets schools, teachers and students, and joins its member organisations around the world in condemning such vicious, barbaric acts.
