Higher education teaching personnel to be celebrated in Paris

published 27 October 2017 updated 30 October 2017

To mark the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Recommendation on Higher Education Teaching Personnel, Education International is throwing the spotlight on tenure, academic freedom, self-governance and collegiality, which are being challenged around the world.

The Commemoration event, to be held at the University of Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne on 31 October, brings together academics and trade union leaders from around the world.

Led by Education International (EI) General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen, the event not only sheds light on the UNESCO Recommendation, but more importantly on how many of the rights and freedoms it outlines are being stripped from academics.

In order to draw governments and key stakeholders’ attention, including higher education institutions, to this important standard setting instrument and to discuss practical measures for its implementation, the event is an opportunity to express opinions and share ideas among colleagues.

The event is being organised on the margins of the General Conference of UNESCO, which takes place from 30 October to 14 November.

The discussions will be livestreamed from 16:00 CET on October 31. Visit https://www.youtube.com/user/EduInternational/live or watch below:
